Steps to Biblical Studies
The courses in our program are divided into lessons, each lesson learning should take place in three (four) main steps:
1. Personal studyEach member of the group prepares a copy of the lesson to read the biblical passage with the references, to think on the questions and to prepare himself alone at home before the group’s gathering.
2. Discussion in the small groupAt the meetings (usually once a week), the people in the small group discuss the issues together. Thus they enrich their understanding, understand their beliefs or doubts, and gain experience in sharing them. The leader of the group is NOT a teacher and does not have the task to teach, but simply to direct the discussion – to give the word to the more shy, to interrupt the garrulous ones, to summarize opinions on difficult or controversial issues, to prevent too much diversion of the discussion to others themes.
3. Reading a commentIt is particularly important for the group to build an atmosphere of love and mutual acceptance. Everyone should feel free to share what they think (regardless of whether it is true) and enjoy the attention and respect of others.
Each subsequent course lesson contains a comment on the passage already discussed. The comment provides additional insight into the author of the biblical book and his readers, clarifies the historical context, casts additional light on biblical teachings. The member of the group reads the comment before going over to the next lesson.
If there are several groups in the same location or within a church, passing the same course of the program at one and the same time, the study may have one more step (# 4).
4.Teaching by a trained teacherIf there are several groups in the same location or within a church, passing the same course of the program at one and the same time, the study may have one more step (# 4).
For such a person, is designed the “Teacher’s Handbook” with detailed plan-concepts to teach each lesson. The lesson must be presented separately from the discussion and after it, at the same time in front of all groups. The goal of the teacher is to encourage listeners and encourage them to practice the lessons learned.
One suggestion: The lesson can also be delivered from the pulpit in the local church – in the form of a sermon or biblical lesson.
